Concept-Variation
For the concept variation project, we were tasked with creating narrative concepts based on our item from the "something interesting" presentation. The following ideas are based around Terry the Tardigrade.
Terry in Space
Based on a tardigrade's ability to survive the vacuum of space, one of my concepts is Terry floating through space observing the universe.
In this story, the Earth explodes, leaving Terry as the sole survivor from his dead planet. The force from the explosion propels him, setting him on a course that takes him through our solar system and beyond. Terry sees the magnificent splendor of our galaxy and struggles with the existential dread of being such a small creature in such a large universe.
Terry as God
This story explores Terry as a deity. The work would focus on worship, showing other creatures praying to Terry for things big and small. Sometimes they get what they want, sometimes they don't. The image to the left shows one particularly devout individual's shrine to their god. In the end, Terry is revealed to be an uncaring god, unconcerned with his followers and their prayers.
The Plight of the Indestructible
Given that tardigrades are known for being able to survive conditions that other creatures cannot, this narrative explores Terry's loneliness from outliving loved ones. Since a tardigrade is much hardier than its peers, Terry's inter-species friendships always lead to bereavement. In the illustration, Terry attends the funeral of a close friend, pondering life, death, and grief.
Animatic
Continuing this assignment, I was instructed to make a rough animatic for one of my concepts. I chose to make one for Terry in Space, because I thought it would be quick and fun to draw up. The frames were drawn in Procreate and edited together in After Effects.
